Farewell to Anne and David

We were sorry to have to say farewell to Anne and David Foster at our service of Morning Prayer on 12th April 2026. Anne has, for several years, led services at St Paul's, being a much-valued member of the Mission Community clergy rota.

David has regularly operated the "desk" at the back of the church to enable congregation members to follow services on the screens. He has also routinely led us in prayer.

They are moving to South Devon to be closer to members of their family. They will be much missed but we wish them well for their lives ahead.

Easter services in review

Our Lent and Easter services have been very enjoyable and well supported. Revd Penny Body made a welcome return to lead our Easter Sunday service on 5th April. There were as many as 35 in the congregation and all were very welcome.

The church had been well decorated with flowers in the nave and Easter posters had been added to the noticebaords in the porch. Thanks especially go the Ange Bellamy and Peter Elder for their hard work, but not forgetting all others who helped to make the church look bright and cheerful for Easter.

Our Hour Before the Cross service on Good Friday at 12 noon was led by Revd Cathy who read seven passages, interspersed with music and hymns, inspired by the last words of Jesus on the Cross. It was a quiet and very meaningful occasion, particularly as Cathy blew out the candle at the foot of the Cross to symbolise Christ's death.

On Good Friday morning, around 50 hardy people walked with the cross up Hooda Hill at Swimbridge, leaving the church at 7:30 am. After the Cross was installed at the top of the hill, hot cross buns and warm drinks were served in St James's Church.

Our Palm Sunday service was held in St Paul's on 29th March and was ably led by Anne Foster. It was a service of Morning Prayer with readings, hymns and a sermon all in the theme of marking Jesus's triumphal entry into Jerusalem shortly before his death.

It can sometimes seem like an anticlimax after a service has taken place which had been looked forward to for so long. The good news, though, is that Easter continues to be celebrated until Pentecost on 24th May 2024, and all will be welcome to join us as we do so.

Holy Week and Easter 2026

All will be welcome to join us at these services which we have organised at the church for Easter, the time when we celebrate the risen Jesus Christ:

• 3rd April, Good Friday, at 12 noon, Hour Before the Cross
• 4th April, Holy Saturday, 2-4pm, Children's Easter activities
• 5th April at 10:30am, Easter Sunday.

Welcome back, Richard!

We were pleased to welcome Revd Richard Freeman back to lead our service of Holy Communion on 8th March 2026. Illness had prevented him from coming ot St Paul's for a while, meaning that it was good to see him again, together with his wife, Angela.

His sermon was based on the Gospel reading for the day about the Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well.

We look forward to welcoming him again in April.

A look ahead to Lent and Easter

Easter Sunday this year will fall on 5th April. This is quite early and means that Lent will begin on 18th February with the celebration of Ash Wednesday.

While it seems as though we have not long finished Christmas, our attention is now turning from Jesus' birth to his crucifixion and resurrection at Easter. 

Lent and Easter services will be advertised here shortly and all will be welcome to join us at this important period in the Christian calendar.

A Happy New Year

We wish all who visit our website a very happy New Year. It has been an especially enjoyable time at St Paul's and our other Mission Community churches with many people attending our services and events, as our article below explains.

Services continue as we look forward to celebrating Epiphany during January, culminating in Candlemas in early February. All are welcome to join us.
